Is Sunday a Memorial of Jesus’ Resurrection?

Should Christians worship on Sunday to honor Jesus’ resurrection?

If Christians accept the Bible as their sole guide into all truth, then they should also accept the Bible memorial of the resurrection of Jesus rather than a memorial set apart only by church tradition. In the Bible, baptism (not Sunday worship) is given to commemorate the death, burial, and resurrection of Jesus.

The Evidence of Paul

Paul says the following, “Or do you not know that as many of us as were baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into His death? Therefore we were buried with Him through baptism into death, that just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life. For if we have been united together in the likeness of His death, certainly we also shall be in the likeness of His resurrection” (Romans 6:3-5).

Sunday Worship or Baptism?

The Bible does not set apart two memorials of the resurrection of Jesus. The Word of God commands one memorial of Jesus' resurrection. Baptism. The acceptance of worship on Sunday as commemorative of the resurrection is without Scriptural authority but comes from the compromise of the Christian church with pagan sun worship in the fourth century. The Bible and history agree that Sunday worship is not the original memorial of the resurrection of Jesus. Paul warns us to "be not deceived" (Galatians 6:7) and to "test all things; hold fast what is good" (1 Thessalonians 5:21). He encourages us by saying, "there remains therefore a rest for the people of God" on the Bible Sabbath (Hebrews 4:9).

Baptism, on the other hand, is a powerful symbol of the death and resurrection of Jesus. Just as He died, was buried in the tomb, and resurrected to new life, we also, through baptism, symbolically die to sin, are buried in Christ and rise to a new life of walking in the Spirit. Going under the water symbolizes the new believer’s commitment to die to their old way of life with its sins and temptations. Coming up out of the water symbolizes the newness of life that Christ offers us as we choose to follow his path and commit ourselves to His calling of service. Paul says, “Therefore we were buried with Him through baptism into death, that just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life” (Romans 6:4). Therefore baptism, not worship on Sunday, is the true memorial of the resurrection of Jesus.
